Wal-Mart Sees Possibilities in Chula Vista

A third Wal-Mart store is coming to the South Bay.

The world’s largest retailer announced Oct. 20 that it will open its store at 1150 Broadway in Chula Vista to shoppers at 8 a.m. Oct. 26.

The 142,000-square-foot store will have 36 departments, offering family apparel, beauty and health products, electronics, toys, crafts, lawn and garden supplies, jewelry and shoes.

Additionally, “this south Chula Vista store will feature specialty items such as Hispanic music, books and foods for our local community as well as our many shoppers from across the border,” said store manager Joe Aguilar.

The store will employ about 450 associates earning $10.16 an hour, which is the average wage Wal-Mart pays full-time workers in California, Wal-Mart said Oct. 20.

After Oct. 26, the store will be open from 7 a.m. until midnight every day.

As of last month, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. of Bentonville, Ark., employed 68,495 people at its six California-based Wal-Mart Supercenters, 150 discount stores, nine distribution centers, and 34 Sam’s Club membership warehouse stores.

Wal-Mart’s shares traded at $45.97 on Oct. 20 on the New York Stock Exchange. The ticker symbol is WMT.
