Stu Segall Productions has thrown its hat into the local venue ring.

The Kearny Mesa-based production company, known for series such as “Silk Stalkings,” “Renegade” and “Pensacola: Wings of Gold,” has begun soliciting parties and other events to be held at its 11-acre site. The site has six sound stages.

The company plans to mingle the events with the filming of its current series, the Sci-Fi Channel’s “Invisible Man” and TNN’s “18 Wheels of Justice,” and other movies.

Many of the details are still coming together, said Renie Colwell, Segall’s director of development of new media. Colwell, who is heading the venture, had no projections as to the number of events the company plans to host, nor the revenues that could be generated.

Along with using the studio facilities for events such as parties, team building activities or a day on the set for executives, the company also plans to hire out its employees to create movie stunts at other event locations, Colwell said.

Segall eventually plans to make the special event business a separate department, she said.

In the month since the company officially entered the venue business, they’ve met with several local event planners and destination management companies, Colwell said.

The Segall site has already become part of some of the bids these companies are making, she said.

Planners have been concerned with how secure a booking at the production site can be, since production schedules are often chaotic and change at the last minute, Colwell said.

The solution lies in good planning and solving last-minute problems, she said.

“Somebody’s event is considered just as important as any episodic show or movie or whatever,” Colwell said.

Along with various requests over the years, the decision to become an official venue was prompted by several events Segall held that were related to “Pensacola,” which was canceled this year.

The show, which was about Marine aviators, had been shot in San Diego since 1997.

Several special events for the military were held at the show’s soundstage and were well received, Colwell said.

Taste Of The Future: With a launch scheduled this week for its new steakhouse, Ladeki Restaurant Group is already making plans for a new restaurant to open next spring in Rancho Mirage.

Called Maraskino, the restaurant will be part of a casino complex, said marketing and sales manager Michelle Mulhern.

The new restaurant will likely feature tapas appetizers from La Jolla-based Ladeki’s other restaurants, including Asian-fusion focused Roppongi, Nuevo Latino Tamarindo and new Del Mar steakhouse Prime Ten, Mulhern said.

Ladeki is still considering what Maraskino’s general d & #233;cor and concept will be, she said.

As for the debut of Prime Ten planned for Dec. 20, Mulhern said that it will be a soft launch. Ladeki likes to tweak the restaurant’s menu and test out the service in the beginning, she said.

Look for the new steakhouse to take a twist on the concept, with a subtle safari theme coming through leopard and tiger print fabrics, a metal background fountain against the bar’s wall and huge torches at the restaurant’s entry.

The $1.5 million restaurant was originally supposed to open in August, and then November. Business and building permits pushed the launch back, according to a representative.

National Publicity: The San Diego Natural History Museum recently got a dose of publicity from a national magazine.

Family Life, owned by Parenting magazine, selected the museum among their “Favorite Kid Friendly” natural history museums.

The magazine has a circulation of 400,000, and its target market is parents of kids ages 3 to 12.

Other institutions named in the natural history-kid friendly category were the American Museum of Natural History in New York, the Field Museum in Chicago, and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science in Colorado.

The deadline for the next Tourism & Hospitality column is Dec. 21. Rodrigues can be reached at (858) 277-6359, Ext. 107, or via e-mail at trodrigues@sdbj.com.
