Tony Gwynn Heads to Cooperstown and Breakfast Tables Everywhere

Tony Gwynn has become the newest Wheaties champion.

Wheaties, the cereal known for featuring pictures of sports stars on its boxes, announced July 19 that the former Padres right fielder and soon-to-be Hall of Famer will grace special-edition boxes for the company’s Fit to Win Challenge, a 12-week online campaign to promote healthy eating.

Gwynn was honored in a ceremony on the day of the announcement at Petco Park to unveil the special-edition box.

This is the first time Gwynn has been on the box by himself. He shared the box with six other outfielders in 1997.

The San Diego Padres are honoring the 20-year major leaguer with its Tribute to Tony Weekend at Petco Park from July 20-22 in preparation for Gwynn’s induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on July 29 in Cooperstown, N.Y.

Giveaways for the three games include Tony Gwynn retro visors, commemorative posters and miniature bats for kids. The Padres will also reveal Petco Park’s first statue, resembling the right fielder, before Saturday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies.
