San Diego medtech startup Skylit Medical has changed its name to Clarify Medical and brought in local executive James M. Sweeney as its new CEO.
Sweeney is taking the reins from Martyn Gross, the company’s founder and CEO for the past two years. Gross, 33, will stay on as the company’s VP of innovation.
“Martyn Gross, our founder, has made great progress with invention and technology development,” said David F. Hale, Clarify Medical’s chairman. “As we move forward in preparing for an FDA clearance submission and market introduction in 2017, this is the perfect time to bring a seasoned CEO on board with expertise in commercializing medical devices.”
Sweeney is a serial entrepreneur in San Diego who’s led health tech companies such as Caremark and CardioNet.
“Jim’s wide experience in raising capital for company expansion and in managing fast-growth entrepreneurial companies will be invaluable,” Hale said in a statement. “Martyn will continue to provide leadership to the company as VP of innovation, and also through his unique perspective as a company founder who is also coping with chronic psoriasis.”
Clarify Medical is a private company making a hand-held UVB light device that can be used to treat skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema and vitiligo. The mobility of the device allows patients to treat their conditions at home instead of visiting doctors or clinics several times a week. This is also helpful to physicians, as they could treat skin conditions without dedicating office space or labor hours for phototherapy.
The company is developing Clarify Mobile UVB treatment system, which integrates with the patient’s smartphone.
