Sempra’s Solar Panels Send Power Into Grid

Sempra Generation, a unit of Sempra Energy, announced Dec. 27 that it has finished installing three blocks of solar panels at its Mesquite Solar 1 project, 40 miles west of Phoenix.

As of late December, the photovoltaic panels were sending 42 megawatts of electricity into the grid. That is enough power to serve the needs of more than 13,000 homes.

Construction began in June. Sempra said it hopes to complete work on the 900-acre installation in 2013. When complete, the facility should produce 150 megawatts of power.

Sempra has a 20-year deal to sell power from the Arizona facility to Pacific Gas & Electric Co.
