Sempra’s Mexican Subsidiary Signs Contract For Solar Plant

Sempra Energy’s Mexican subsidiary has signed a 20-year contract to finance, build, operate and maintain a 110-megawatt photovoltaic solar plant that would supply a privately owned steelmaker.

IEnova announced March 27 it would invest $115 million in the project proposed for the city of Caborca in the northwestern Mexican state of Sonora. Its construction is expected to create 500 temporary jobs.

All power generated at the plant, dubbed Pima Solar, will be directed to DEACERO, a global steelmaking company based in Garza García, Nuevo Leon.

IEnova called the transaction Mexico’s first renewable energy supply agreement between a private power generator and an industrial company.
