San Diego’s unemployment rate edged downward to 4.7 percent in December, from 4.8 percent the month before, as the region’s labor force slightly contracted.
The county lost 300 net jobs from November, but the unemployment rate improved as the labor force lost more than 4,000 members to hit 1,568,300, according to seasonally unadjusted data released by the California Employment Development Department.
Seasonal growth in retail led to 1,900 more jobs in the sector last month. Accommodation and food services lost 1,600 jobs.
California’s unemployment also worsened slightly, from 5.7 percent to 5.8 percent, and the national unemployment rate held steady at 5 percent. San Diego’s unemployment was 5.5 percent last December.
