Executive Spotlight: Renee Tuzee

Freeline Inc., a Carlsbad extreme sport products company, has named Renee Tuzee its chief executive officer. Tuzee will work with Freeline co-founders to continue in marketing and branding efforts, as she heads the company.

Before joining Freeline, Tuzee worked as vice president of marketing for Piaggio USA, where she helped to relaunch Vespa scooters to the United States. She also served in dealer promotions for Bombardier Inc., marketing Sea-Doo watercraft and Ski-Doo snowmobiles.

As a veteran recreational products marketing executive, Tuzee will work with Freeline to target board-sport consumers with the company’s new dual independent skates.

Banking and Finance

Callan Capital has announced its formation as a boutique wealth management firm, founded by brothers Trevor Callan and Ryan Callan. Previously, they managed assets for Merrill Lynch.

Construction and Design

Marrokal Construction has announced the addition of Tim Jones to its design staff. Jones brings 23 years of architectural design experience to Marrokal.

Brookfield Homes announced the promotion of Adam Pevney from project manager to assistant vice president of the homebuilder’s San Diego/Riverside division. Pevney has more than nine years of executive-level experience in land development and the homebuilding industry.

NTD Stichler Architecture has appointed Stephan Castellanos as an architect. Formerly, Castellanos served as California state architect from 2000 to 2005.


Palomar College and its fund-raising arm, the Palomar College Foundation, have selected Richard Talmo as the new director of development, executive director of the foundation. Talmo has been executive director and chief executive officer for the Chabot College Foundation at Chabot College in Hayward since 2003, and previously was in the private sector as an executive recruiter in San Francisco. He has 18 years’ experience in the education sector.

Government and Nonprofit

Girl Scouts, San Diego/Imperial Council, has added eight community leaders to its board. The new members, who will serve a three-year term, are: Sharon Cohen, assistant general counsel for Sempra Energy; Beth Fischer, division president for Pardee Homes; Gregory Kalinsky, regional vice president for Geico Insurance; Beatrice Kemp, vice president and general counsel for the San Diego Convention Center Corp.; Beth Machado, senior vice president of recruitment for AMN Healthcare; Lori Rappaport, clinical psychologist; and community volunteers Hollyce Phillips and Ann Suhr.

Health Care and Biotech

Golden Care Academy has added Stuart Gross to its board of directors. Gross has worked in the information technology field for 30 years and serves as director of IT and security for the Southern California Physicians Managed Care Services. He is responsible for working with a senior management team to develop and implement long-term plans.

Metabasis Therapeutics Inc. said that George Schreiner, chief executive officer of Raven Biotechnologies Inc., was named to its board of directors. In 2006, Schreiner joined Raven, and previously he served for 10 years at Scios Inc., in executive management roles.

Adventrx Pharmaceuticals Inc. said that Jack Lief has been named chairman of the company. Lief is president, chief executive officer, founder and director of Arena Pharmaceuticals Inc.


The Pearl Hotel has announced the appointment of Arron Reynolds as its first general manager. Reynolds will oversee the daily operations for the Pearl.

Real Estate

Prudential California Realty has named Leslie Reyes director of human resources. Reyes will oversee the management of the human resources department

Willis Allen Real Estate welcomes Kelly Zapatka to its Coronado office. Previously, Zapatka sold real estate in Mexico, and she has an extensive background in property management and business.

Realty Income Corp. has announced the appointment of Gregory McLaughlin to the company’s board of directors. McLaughlin will serve on the board’s nominating/corporate governance committee.

Janez Group has appointed Julie Allen to the newly created position of corporate sales and leasing manager. In her new role, she will oversee the leasing and marketing of the company’s portfolio of office, industrial and research and development properties.

Ware Malcomb’s San Diego office has announced the appointment of three new employees. Preston Ball brings 30 years of design experience to Ware Malcomb as senior project manager in the interior design studio. Hector Zuniga also brings 30 years of experience to his new role as senior project manager in the commercial architecture studio. Phil Lisotta joins the firm as senior project architect in the commercial architecture studio, and has 12 years of experience.

Clark Realty has announced the relocation of Sam Bellas as an associate at the firm’s San Diego office. Bellas will assist with the closing and start of construction for the Pacific Beacon project.

Technology and Manufacturing

Viking Systems Inc., a designer, manufacturer and marketer of vision systems and solutions, has appointed Robert Mathews to the position of executive vice president and chief financial officer. Mathews will assume direct responsibility for all of Viking’s financial activities and will work closely with senior management on strategic initiatives.
