San Diego County Taxpayers Association Names New Leader

Mark Leslie was named as the new president and CEO of the San Diego County Taxpayers Association.

He replaces interim president Sean Karafin, who was named to the job when former president Felipe Monroig took a job on the staff of Mayor Kevin Faulconer.

Leslie, 61, spent most of his 40-year career at AT&T and Pacific Telephone in external communications. He retired from AT&T in 2012 and served as the board chairman for the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce that year, and as chairman of United Way of San Diego in 2010-11.

As chairman of United Way, Leslie was credited for reversing a lengthy decline. At the chamber, he was instrumental in developing that organization’s most aggressive budget in 15 years, said the SDCTA.

“This is a home run for San Diego Taxpayers,” said SDCTA chairman Greg Stein. “Our search committee set out to find a leader who is passionate about our ideals, understands our nonpartisan taxpayer-oriented policy role, and owns a track record of accomplishments that generates excitement among our members and the community.”
