The Salk Institute for Biological Studies is getting $25 million from the Helmsley Charitable Trust of New York to build on its programs for chronic inflammation, a condition at the root of many diseases.
The grant will provide three years of support for the Salk research team in several areas of study, including cancer, stem cells, and metabolism. The institute received a $42 million gift from Helmsley in 2013.
Salk President Elizabeth Blackburn says the grant is vital for the pursuit of transformative research – the kind that radically changes our understanding of existing scientific concepts.
“The Helmsley Charitable Trust has made extraordinary gifts to support Salk science over the past decade,” Blackburn said in a statement. “We are tremendously grateful to Helmsley for their commitment to improve health and for supporting pioneering research here at the institute.”
The gift to Salk is part of $1.6 billion in gifts the trust has made worldwide in health, medicine, education and social services. The trust was created in 1999 by the late New York hotel and real estate tycoon Leona Helmsley.
