Noah Homes Housing Tapped to Help Develop Plans for Texas Housing Project

Noah Homes Housing, a nonprofit headquartered in San Diego that provides residential care for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, has been selected by My Possibilities, a Texas-based organization that helps with continued education and job placement for adults with the same disabilities, to help develop plans for a new 300-home community in the city of Garland.

A third of the homes will be made available to adults with autism, Down syndrome and other disabilities, while the remainder will be up for purchase to anyone wanting to live within the inclusive community. My Possibilities will operate all open spaces and amenities as well as provide services such as security, transportation, and on-call nursing. According to a news release, this is the first community of its kind in and will work with individuals that want to utilize Medicaid waiver funds to live independently.

“As My Possibilities moves into the world of residential support for people with intellectual disabilities, we sought out the best programs across the country to serve as partners and models for us,” said Michael Thomas, Executive Director at My Possibilities, via a statement. “We believe Noah Homes is one of the best organizations in the field and hope to emulate many of their practices in our future community.”

According to the news release, this underserved population of more than 6.5 million people in the U.S. is increasingly dealing with issues as they age and outlive family caregivers. The life expectancy for people with Down syndrome has increased in recent decades, from 25 in 1983 to 60 today.
