Nassco Lays Keel of Sixth Cargo Ship

Workers at General Dynamics Nassco, the shipbuilding unit based in San Diego, laid the keel for a sixth super cargo ship for the U.S. Navy’s T-AKE series May 30.

The new ship, the USNS Amelia Earhart, is scheduled to be delivered to the Navy in the fall of 2008. Nassco has already delivered two T-AKE ships to the Navy, and has five others under construction.

When completed, the Earhart will be 689 feet long and displace 41,000 metric tons, fully weighted. The ships deliver food, ammunition, fuel and other provisions to Navy combat ships at sea.

In addition to the Navy work, Nassco is also beginning construction on the first of nine tankers for U.S. Shipping Partners LP.

Nassco is the only major ship construction yard on the West Coast and has 4,600 employees.
