An Internet-based San Diego company is offering its users an opportunity to make money in a multi-billion-dollar market and has announced a partnership to provide that service more widely.
With 17 employees, MyNuMo allows people to register with its Web site (www.mynumo.com) to create, use and sell digital media , ringtones, wallpapers and videos , to be downloaded onto mobile hand-held devices.
Content creators can also sell their media to users through the site for their piece of the pie, making approximately 40 cents per sale on a $2 ringtone or wallpaper. Downloadable videos retail at $3 apiece.
On Sept. 7, America Online announced MyNuMo was one of three companies to help AOL roll out its recently launched AOL Instant Messenger Phoneline initiative. The other two companies are Iotum and Mvox Technologies.
AIM Phoneline is a voice over Internet protocol service provided through the AOL Instant Messenger application. MyNuMo will enable its 28 million users to customize their VoIP service with “ringback” tones , songs or other content that are played while a caller is waiting for the other side to answer.
According to MyNuMo Chief Executive Officer William Volk, this will tap a “new market” of VoIP ringback tones. AIM Phoneline users will be able to choose caller-specific ringback tones, paying a subscription for a bundle of ringbacks and deciding which callers hear what tone.
Volk added that MyNuMo will be adding mainstream media content to be available for the Phoneline service, allowing users to choose popular songs for ringback tones as well as user-generated ones.
The pay structure that content generators can expect through Phoneline distribution was not disclosed, but Volk said that it will be roughly the same pay structure as MyNuMo’s general service.
