Lee Blumenfeld Tapped to Lead Business Development at Sanford Burnham Prebys

Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute has created a new vice president position to lead its business development strategy.

The La Jolla nonprofit research organization disclosed the decision Nov. 15 as it announced who will fill the role – Dr. Lee Blumenfeld, former vice president of business development at Bannockburn, Ill.-based Baxalta Inc., a spinoff of Baxter Healthcare Corp., which makes renal and other medical products.

Besides leading SBP’s business development strategy, Blumenfeld is expected to coordinate the researchers, lawyers and others assigned to its business development activities, the institute said in a news release.

Before joining Baxalta, Blumenfeld worked as vice president of business development at Baxter from 2002 to 2015. He earned a bachelor’s degree in human biology at Stanford University and a master’s in business administration at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He earned his medical degree at the University of Illinois School of Medicine.
