Kashi Co. Expands Recall Due to Listeria Concerns over Sunflower Seeds

Kashi Co. removed more of its products from the shelves June 16 as part of a voluntary recall concerning a possible Listeria contamination.

The Solana Beach company, which makes breakfast foods and snacks, expanded its May 31 recall to include certain Kashi granola bars and Bear Naked products.

The company said it took the action because sunflower seeds distributed by organic supplier SunOpta are potentially contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly, and others with weakened immune systems.

The products added to the recall are:

• Kashi GoLean Honey Pecan Baklava Bars, 5-count with a UPC code of 18627 10474, and “Best If Used Before” dates of July 21, Aug. 7, Sept. 13, Sept. 22 and Oct. 20, all in 2016.

• And Bear Naked Soft Baked Granola, Cinnamon + Sunflower Butter, 11 ounce pouch with a UPC code of 84623 10163, and use by dates of Aug. 13, 2016 to Jan. 11, 2017.

Most people who get Listeria suffer high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea for short periods of time, but infection can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

No illnesses linked to the products have been confirmed, according to Kashi.

Kashi said customers who have purchased recalled products should discard them and contact the company for a refund.
