Jury Orders Qualcomm to Pay Broadcom $19.6M

A federal jury unanimously ruled May 29 that Qualcomm Inc. willfully infringed three Broadcom Corp. patents related to cell phone technology and awarded Broadcom $19.6 million.

Since the U.S. District Court in Santa Ana found that Qualcomm’s infringement was willful, the trial judge has the right to increase the damages up to three times the amount awarded by the jury.

The case is one of several filed in recent years among cell phone technology companies trying to stake their claims on aspects of technology used in phones around the world.

About 17 percent of worldwide wireless subscribers use Qualcomm’s CDMA technology, the company has reported.

Qualcomm’s stock, traded as QCOM on the Nasdaq, was down nearly 4 percent the day after the announcement at $42.54.
