Junior Seau Foundation Honors Bob Breitbard at Teammates Luncheon

The Junior Seau Foundation honored Bob Breitbard at the Seventh Annual Teammates Luncheon on Nov. 9 held at The Grand Del Mar hotel. Breitbard was recognized for his dedication to sports and the community for more than 50 years. Presenting sponsors included Fujitsu, Toshiba America Inc., Edco and Filippi’s Pizza Grotto Corp., as well as the chief executive officer of the New England Patriots, Robert Kraft.

Scripps Health President and CEO Chris Van Gorder received the Guardian Award from the University of Southern California for Alumni Service in recognition of his visionary leadership in the community he serves. The award was presented at the second annual Alumni Guardian Awards dinner Oct. 9.

The annual 2007 Red Ribbon Luncheon, hosted by the San Diego Prevention Coalition, was held Oct. 26. Red Ribbon Week began 22 years ago when Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena was kidnapped and murdered. Awards were presented to students, educators and leaders for their anti-drug efforts. Sponsors of the luncheon included Sundt Memorial Foundation, the Drug Enforcement Administration, Washington Mutual Inc., Sony Electronics, California Border Alliance Group, Hilton on San Diego Mission Bay and Alvarado Hospital.

San Diego State University biology professor J. David Archibald has been named a 2007 Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. “It’s great to see Dr. Archibald acknowledged for his ongoing research,” said College of Sciences Dean Stanley Maloy. Archibald teaches courses in genetics and evolution, mammalogy and biogeography.

The Wilson Petty Kosmo & Turner LLP law firm received the Legal Employer Award for Diversity recently, which was presented by the Earl B. Gilliam Bar Association, an affiliate of the California Association of Black Lawyers and the National Bar Association. The award is presented to employers in the local legal community that demonstrate a commitment to diversity in the workplace.

San Diego attorney Shawn McMillan was honored by the Orange County Trial Lawyer’s Association as a “Top Gun” Trial Lawyer of the Year in the Civil Rights category. McMillan was selected for his work in the landmark parental rights case, Deanna Fogarty-Hardwick v. Orange County Social Services. McMillan also serves as the vice president and director of the Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce of San Diego and sits on the board of the Asian Business Association of San Diego.

Lenette Hewitt, vice president of sales and marketing for Barratt American Inc.’s Urban division, received the Brian Angelini Memorial Marketing Director of the Year Award by the Sales and Marketing Council of the Building Industry Association. The award recognizes marketing professionals who have made significant contributions to their companies and their industry.

The Industrial Environmental Association recognized five winners of the 2007 Environmental Responsibility and Sustainability awards at their The Greening California Businesses conference. Recognized was Qualcomm Inc., Navy Facilities Engineering Command Southwest, Sony Electronics in partnership with Allied Waste and San Diego County Supervisor Greg Cox, and Palomar Energy Center. Biogen Idec’s Pat Hoy, director of the company’s Global Sustainability Program, was named recipient of the Community Sustainability Award. The Arc of San Diego presented the Community Partner Award to the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians for its continuous service to people with disabilities.

Leon Reinhart received an International Philanthropic Leadership Award at the International Community Foundation and Fundaci International de la Copmmunidad A.C.’s second annual gala. The gala, which celebrates efforts to expand cross-border philanthropy and improve health, benefited the International Community Foundation’s Sustainable Communities Fund. “Leon has been a philanthropic leader for 10 years and his support has helped eradicate poverty among the Mayans, aid cultural preservation in Meso-America and fund education programs in Mexico,” said board chair Mary Walshok.
