San Diego’s instrument maker Illumina Inc. has opened a five-story manufacturing facility on its campus, adding to the company’s sizeable footprint in University Town Center.
The latest building, which totals 295,000 square feet, will house office, lab, manufacturing and warehouse operations.
The new building is the latest in a string of real estate projects for Illumina. In April 2016, the company leased BioMed Realty’s entire 316,000 square foot i3 campus (a $146 million project), which it plans to occupy in addition to retaining its significant presence in UTC.
Illumina employs more than 4,800 globally, including nearly 2,000 in the local market. As one of San Diego’s largest public companies, the firm has a market cap of $23.7 billion and reported 2015 sales of $2.2 billion. The company does research and development in DNA sequencing and related genomic areas, applied to industries including health care and agriculture.
Illumina’s headquarters campus is at 5200 Illumina Way, and it has regional offices in San Francisco, Santa Clara, Redwood City and Madison, Wisconsin.
