Seventeen candidates are vying for the 2nd District seat of former San Diego Deputy Mayor Michael Zucchet, while nine more are going after the 8th District seat vacated by City Councilman Ralph Inzunza both of whom were recently convicted on corruption charges and subsequently resigned.
San Diego City Councilwoman Donna Frye and Jerry Sanders, a former San Diego police chief, also are competing for the seat vacated by Mayor Dick Murphy, who stepped down July 15.
The following submitted their paperwork to the city clerk’s office by the Aug. 12 deadline:
District 2: Kathleen Blavatt, designer/teacher/small-business owner; Carolyn Chase, writer/manager; David Diehl, advocate; Tom Eaton, teacher; Kevin Faulconer, public relations executive; Greg Finley, retired chief executive officer; Linda Susan Finley, sales/business owner/student; Lorena Gonzalez, environmental attorney; Rich Grosch teacher/businessman/trustee, San Diego Community College District; Allen Hujsak, Web software designer/programmer; Robert E. Lee, security professional/Web designer; Phil Meinhardt, real estate/new home sales; James Joaquin Morrison, apartment manager; George Richard Najjar, attorney; Tim Rutherford, attorney; Ian Trowbridge, retired Salk Institute professor/civic activist; and Pat Zaharopoulos, state deputy attorney general.
District 8: Luis Acle, president, San Diego Unified School District, Board of Education; Remigia Bermxdez, educator; Dan Coffee, attorney; Tim Gomez, notary public; Douglas Holbrook, attorney; Ben Hueso, program manager; Matthew Moncayo, communications analyst; Lincoln Pickard, Web master/reporter/semi-retired; and Kathy Vandenheuvel, environmental engineer.
