Guilty Pleas on Hiring Illegal Immigrants

Attorneys for two executives of the Golden State Fence Co. and the company itself pleaded guilty to hiring illegal immigrants during a Dec. 14 appearance in federal district court in San Diego.

Melvin Kay and Michael McLaughlin face jail terms of up to five years and fines. Sentencing has been scheduled for March. The company has agreed to forfeit $4.7 million.

Based in Riverside, Golden State Fence has eight offices, including one in Oceanside, where federal officials alleged some of the crime occurred.

Published reports said Golden State had installed fencing at military bases and on the U.S.-Mexico border.
