Gilmer Named CEO of San Diego Symphony

Martha Gilmer, a longtime executive and creative leader with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, has been named CEO of the San Diego Symphony.

Gilmer has signed a three-year contract that starts Sept. 24, according to an announcement from Shearn Platt, chairman of the San Diego Symphony’s board.

During Gilmer’s 35 years with the Chicago Symphony, she worked under three music directors and with numerous guest conductors and soloists. She has overseen that orchestra’s artistic planning, education programs, professional chorus and other special programs. In her current capacity as vice president of artistic planning and audience development, she has developed collaborative work with other Chicago institutions.

“Martha has shown herself to be a strong and creative leader,” Platt said of Gilmer’s work with the Chicago Symphony. “Her name in the music world is synonymous with great artistic vision, dynamic leadership and audience development through original programming. … Martha is the right person to lead us in the years ahead.”

Gilmer said she has been impressed by the San Diego Symphony and has found its board of directors to be “passionate about music.”

“In meeting board members, Music Director Jahja Ling, musicians and staff leadership, I felt a shared passion and desire for continued artistic growth of this orchestra,” she said.

The San Diego Symphony performs more than 140 concerts and community outreach programs annually throughout San Diego County.
