Energy Panel Sets Public Workshop

As electricity rates climb locally, the San Diego Regional Energy Office is looking into solving the problem by bringing additional electricity generation into the area.

The agency will hold the first in a series of public workshops at 9 a.m. Aug. 30 to solicit input on its energy plan update. The meetings are intended to help guide the planning process to address the region’s long-term energy needs, said Kurt Kammerer, spokesman for the REO.

The workshop will be held at the San Diego Regional Energy Office, 401 B St., Eighth Floor. Dates for additional workshops will be announced at a later time.

The hearings are part of a process to update the Energy Plan. The agency was directed to update its plan June 23 in response to changes in the region’s energy needs resulting from technological developments and industry deregulation, Kammerer said.

Topics to be discussed include supply and reliability. While electric industry restructuring has brought enhanced customer choice and may hasten access to more efficient technologies, it has also presented challenges such as price increases and supply concerns, Kammerer said.
