Edelweiss Air Starting New Direct Flights Between San Diego and Zurich

Switzerland-based carrier Edelweiss Air plans to begin its previously announced direct flight service between San Diego and Zurich on June 9.

San Diego International Airport officials said the first inbound flight was slated to arrive in San Diego just before 6 p.m. Officials last year announced that Edelweiss will be flying between the two cities on Mondays and Fridays through November, with schedule and other information at flyedelweiss.com.

The flights will use an Airbus A340-300 aircraft with 314 seats. At the time the new service was announced in June 2016, Edelweiss CEO Bernd Bauer said the direct flights will bring approximately 15,000 visitors to San Diego annually, creating an economic impact of approximately $50 million.

Founded in 2008, Edelweiss Air is part of Germany-based Lufthansa Group and a sister company to Swiss International Air Lines.

The new service follows the recent debut of German carrier Condor Airlines’ direct flights between San Diego and Frankfurt. Condor’s flights are running Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays through early September.

Airport officials said the service to Switzerland will bring to six the number of countries directly accessible by air for San Diego travelers.
