Dump the Pump, Use Public Transportation June 21, Agency Urges

The Metropolitan Transit System is participating June 21 in the second annual National Dump the Pump Day to promote use of public transit.

MTS has joined the effort started by the American Public Transit Association to help raise awareness for public transit as a viable option in light of rising fuel prices.

According to the MTS, the number of people using the system’s buses and trolleys has increased by more than 4 percent. More than 250,000 commuters use the system’s public transit services daily.

In conjunction with the effort, MTS added a “cost of commuting” calculator to its Web site, www.sdmts.com. The calculator shows the difference in costs between driving and public transit.

Luis Gonzalez, a spokesman for MTS, said that the day is primarily about encouraging people to use public transit, especially those who might not have thought about it before.

“If at least one person uses public transit today, it makes a difference,” said Gonzalez. “It’s not only going to help economically, but it helps the environment as well.”

One way that businesses can get involved in promoting public transit is through the ECO Pass Program, which offers employers discounts on buying monthly passes for employees.
