Desalination Plant Pipeline Is 50% Complete

A 10-mile pipeline that’s part of Carlsbad’s Desalination Plant is half-way completed, said the developer, Poseidon Water.

When finished in 2016, the $1 billion desalination plant will be the largest, most technologically advanced system of its kind in the world. It will produce 50 million gallons of water daily, helping to reduce the area’s reliance on water that is purchased elsewhere by the San Diego County Water Authority, the company said.

Pipeline installation began last year in San Marcos, and was happening recently in Carlsbad. It is expected to continue through 2015.

The project is the result of a 30-year water purchase agreement between the water authority and Poseidon Water for the purchase of up to 56,000 acre feet of desalinated water. The three main components of the project are the 10-mile pipeline, the plant itself, and about $80 million in upgrades the water authority is making to its facilities.
