Court Approves Sale of 8 More Local Haggen Stores

The U.S. Bankruptcy Court has approved the sale of 47 more Haggen Inc. grocery stores in five states, including eight in San Diego County. Financial terms of separate purchase agreements involving several retailers were not immediately available.

A Haggen statement said the court has approved the reacquisition of four of the local stores by Albertsons LLC, which divested several locations nationwide last year, prior to its merger with Safeway Inc., parent of Vons.

Local stores set to return to the Albertsons banner are on Rancho Bernardo Road in Rancho Bernardo, Highland Village Place in Carmel Valley, Broadway Street in El Cajon and Lake Murray Boulevard in La Mesa.

The bankruptcy court also approved the sale of stores on Telegraph Canyon Road in Chula Vista and Balboa Avenue in Clairemont to Asian grocer Tawa Inc. Good Food Holdings, parent of specialty grocer Bristol Farms, will get the store on West Washington Street in Mission Hills, and discount retailer Smart & Final Stores LLC will get the location on University Avenue in North Park.

The court earlier this month approved the sale of 10 other local Haggen locations to Smart & Final, and three to Gelson’s Markets. The status of four other stores in San Diego County had not been finalized as of Nov. 25.
