Couple Purchase Oceanside Photograph and Telescope

Oceanside Photograph and Telescope Inc. (OPT), a major supplier of astronomy equipment, has been sold to Dustin and Ginny Gibson. The couple bought the company from retiring industry veteran Craig Weatherwax.

OPT, now an LLC under its new ownership, is headquartered at the company’s retail distribution facility in Oceanside. It specializes in the retailing and servicing of over 160 premier brand telescopes, cameras and accessory lines for amateur astronomy enthusiasts and professionals alike.

The company also custom designs advanced imaging systems for universities and govern-mental agency clients including NASA.

“For the past 42 years, Craig’s life work has been building OPT into the absolute, global authority in telescopes and imaging systems,” Dustin said. “We’re committed to Craig’s vision. Ginny and I will continue bringing awareness to our brand and make astronomy a hobby that the entire family can be involved in. OPT, LLC will provide entry-level equipment as well as the world’s most advanced telescopes and accessories, while our staff continues providing provide expert advice.”

The Gibsons both became OPT employees after moving to California from Nashville about nine months ago to pursue a career with OPT. Dustin is an imaging specialist pursuing a graduate degree in Planetary Science, and Ginny is the company’s director of e-commerce operations. Both are avid astrophotographers.

“Thanks to Craig and his wife, Leigh Weatherwax, and their staff, OPT has become the destination for astronomy enthusiasts from around the world with its large retail showroom, massive inventory and digital processing and imaging experts,” said Dustin.

Weatherwax purchased the company in 1974 when it was a small camera shop.

Under Oceanside Photo and Telescope, LLC, the new management team will continue to host the annual Southern California Astronomy Exhibition (SCAE) as well as increasing the events calendar in 2017 with seminars, webinars and training sessions in deep-space photography.
