County’s Unemployment Rate Is 4.7% for January

San Diego’s unemployment rate edged down to 4.7 percent in January, from a revised 4.8 percent the month before, as a smaller labor force offsets a net loss of 19,800 jobs.

Post-holiday retail cutbacks of temporary workers accounted for about 9,000 lost jobs, according to seasonally unadjusted data released by the California Employment Development Department. Manufacturing reporting the only monthly employment growth, gaining 300 jobs.

California’s unemployment also improved somewhat, from 5.9 to 5.7 percent.
