County Official: Get Facts on Fiction

Gregory J. Smith, San Diego County’s assessor/recorder/clerk, issued a news flash for business owners Feb. 22 , file your own fictitious business name statements and save yourselves some big bucks.

Seems that Smith’s office has been hearing from many business owners, who are getting solicited by a couple of Sacramento-based operations, offering to do the filing for $100. But businesses can file their own statements by mail or in person at any of the branch locations , “in the majority of cases, for substantially less,” said Smith.

The average fee is $20, and, for an additional $5, a renewal statement will be sent to the business owner before the expiration date, said Smith.

Fictitious business name statements are valid for five years, as long as the information remains the same; while publication in a newspaper is only necessary for first-time filings or if changes are made to the original filing, he said.

The forms can be downloaded from the office’s Web site at www.sdarcc.com and then mailed in.

The branch offices are in Downtown San Diego at 1600 Pacific Highway, Room 260; in Chula Vista, 590 Third Ave.; in El Cajon, 200 S. Magnolia Ave.; in Kearny Mesa, 9225 Clairemont Mesa Blvd.; and in San Marcos, 334 Via Vera Cruz, Suite 150.
