Collins Begins Work on New Branch Library

Crews from Collins General Contractors of San Diego are under way building the Mission Valley branch of the San Diego Public Library.

The 19,000-square-foot library on Friars Road near Qualcomm Way is going up next door to Fenton Marketplace, an $80 million home and garden center now under construction, said Tom Sudberry, one of the developers of the marketplace. Fehlman LaBarre Architecture & Planning of San Diego produced the design guidelines for Fenton Marketplace.

Meanwhile, San Diego-based Ninteman Construction Co. is building a 1.1 million-gallon water storage tank under a softball field at the Balboa Naval Hospital next to Balboa Park.

The $2 million design-build project includes excavating ground beneath an existing playing field to a depth of about 30 feet so that a pre-stressed concrete tank can be built to provide emergency water for the hospital, said Peter Vander Werff, project manager.

San Diego-area subcontractors on the job include DYK for tank construction; Naton Engineering for earth moving work; and Redondo Electric for utility line installation, he said.

Ninteman crews just finished up $800,000 in renovation and new construction for St. Vincent de Paul Village in the East Village area of San Diego.

The builder removed three buildings to make way for a park and playground at 17th and Commercial streets, said Luke Ninteman, project manager.
