The California Coastal Commission approved a new electrical substation for Chula Vista, relocating that power generator to a location about a quarter of a mile away, and paving the way for demolishing the existing substation.
The permit granted to San Diego Gas & Electric allows a project to go forward, following years of public vetting that included approval from the state’s Public Utilities Commission last year.
It’s also part of the city of Chula Vista’s bay-front master plan that includes developing a convention center hotel, as well as residential and commercial structures.
As part of the 230 kilovolt substation project, SDG&E agreed to place underground some 1,000 feet of electrical lines, as well as make $2.5 million in contributions to two local nonprofits, the Living Coast Discovery Center and the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge.
In February 2013, the much larger South Bay Power Station, also on Chula Vista’s bay front, was demolished.
