City Receives $100,000 Federal Grant to Revitalize ‘Promise Zone’

The City of San Diego has been awarded $100,000 to create and put in place a comprehensive economic development strategy for revitalizing its new, federally designated “promise zone.”

The grant, one of 22 announced Nov. 2 by U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Jay Williams, is intended to stimulate economic growth in the 77,000-resident zone extending from East Village and Barrio Logan eastward to Encanto and Emerald Hills.

The zone was established earlier this year as part of an initiative by the Obama administration to expand opportunities in aging, economically distressed neighborhoods.

Various public and private sector entities are expected to have a role in developing the economic strategy covered by the grant.
