Chargers to Kick Off Season on New Radio Home

The San Diego Chargers will now be heard exclusively on San Diego Clear Channel Communications station KIOZ-FM 105.3.

The station’s Chargers coverage is set to kick off April 23 with the NFL Draft.

The five-year agreement calls for all Chargers preseason, regular season and postseason games, as well as additional Chargers programming, to be broadcast on KIOZ, commonly known as Rock 105.3.

The football team will also receive promotional support on all 12 local Clear Channel-operated stations, which include KHTS-FM 93.3, KUSS-FM 95.7 and KLSD-AM 1360.

“This gives us a chance to talk to all of our fans,” said Jim Steeg, the Chargers’ executive vice president and chief operating officer.

Steeg credits Clear Channel’s broad listener base through its multiple stations as a significant reason for the partnership.

The Chargers previously had a partnership with Midwest Television, Inc., which owns KFMB-AM 760 and KFMB-TV Channel 8.

Since 2000, KFMB 760 and Channel 8 had exclusive rights to broadcast the Chargers games.

That agreement ended at the completion of the Chargers’ 2004 season.

The Chargers are still looking for a TV station to retain the rights to air the team’s preseason games, Steeg said.

Through the agreement with Clear Channel, the Chargers will also receive significant airtime on Clear Channel stations KGB-FM 101.5 and KOGO-AM 600.

The game-day broadcasts will include three-hour pre-game and two-hour post-game shows.

The Chargers’ broadcast team will be announced in the coming weeks.

New Ad Magazine:

San Diego will soon be getting another regional magazine with the launching of Create Magazine, a locally focused trade magazine for San Diego’s advertising and creative production industries.

The magazine, which is scheduled to hit newsstands April 15, is being launched by Create Communications, publisher of Create magazines in Orlando, Fla., and Miami.

The quarterly magazine will cover the people, businesses, trends and events that make up the advertising, design, printing, photography, film and video, animation and new media industries in the region.

In addition to San Diego, the magazine is scheduled to launch 17 new magazines in cities across the nation, including Los Angeles and Phoenix.

All the publications will premiere on April 15, said Jerry Brown, the editor-in-chief of the magazine.

The editions will have the same format but will be localized to each city.

The 80-page glossy magazine is expected to reach a circulation base of 5,000 in San Diego.

“While San Diego may not be one of the top five markets (populationwise), San Diego is still a huge market,” Brown said. “And it is one of the most creative markets.”

The content will be developed by San Diegans but will be compiled at Create Magazine’s headquarters in Orlando.

The San Diego edition will also include feature articles on local advertising agencies and trade organizations, updates on San Diego creative professionals and reports from industry events.

The magazine, which will retail for $7.95, will be available for purchase at several bookstores throughout the county, including Barnes & Noble, Borders and B. Dalton.

L7 Creative Communications had a good several months, reports Tom Gallego, the president of the Poway-based firm.

The full-service advertising and public relations agency has added four new clients to its roster and continues to grow.

The new clients are Gen-Probe, which retained L7 to launch a multi-state college campaign; Gatorz Eyewear, which selected L7 to launch a new brand image; Eisenhower Medical Center, which will work with L7 to initiate a new brand campaign and Web site; and Vizio Home Electronics, which L7 will help with branding, packaging and point-of-sales materials.

With these four new clients, L7 has added seven new clients in the last three months.

National radio host Hugh Hewitt hosts his second business government town hall forum broadcasts from 3-6 p.m. on March 25 at the Office Pavilion, 6920 Carroll Road in San Diego.

Hewitt, who can be heard from 3-6 p.m. every weekday on KCBQ-AM 1170, will broadcast before a live audience and discuss lawsuit abuse with a group of panelists.

Panelists include California state Sen.
