Brigantine Co-Owner Opens Retail Outlet Featuring Familiar Restaurant Items

After years of responding to patrons’ inquiries on where they can purchase the decorative items, artwork and furnishings they see at The Brigantine Family of Restaurants’ many establishments throughout the county, co-owner Barbara Morton decided to open a retail outlet, Miguelito’s , Salsa de Artes y Comer, and sell some of them herself.

In English, salsa de artes y comer means room of art and food, which describes the dual purpose establishment that opened in May adjacent to Miguel’s Cocina and the Brigantine in Coronado.

“Many times I get people asking where they can find the chairs, fabrics, napkins, plates or light fixtures that they see in the restaurants,” Morton said. “So we decided to open a retail store with a Mexican or Spanish theme that includes some of those fixtures, as well as candles, soap dishes and some antiques that would be in a conglomerate gift shop and banquet space.”

Morton doesn’t like to boast.

But she has done the interior decorating and garden landscaping at the company’s 11 eateries since she and her husband founded the business

in 1969.

Her reputation for creating a

dining atmosphere that is festive and friendly, using a bold, but not overwhelming, color palate, intimate lighting and hand selecting all of the amenities is what draws people’s attention.

In 1,500 square feet of space, Miguelito’s houses a small wine bar, deli case, main retail area and additional room containing goods for sale that can double as a banquet area for private parties for as many as 50 people. There’s an adjacent outdoor patio as well.

The tab for remodeling the former floral shop came to $100,000. Construction began in November.

Aside from Miguel’s Cocina and the Brigantine in Coronado, the company owns the Brigantine restaurants in Del Mar, Escondido, La Mesa, Point Loma and Poway. It also owns Azul La Jolla, and Miguel’s in Eastlake and Point Loma.
