Birth Center Opens at Palomar Medical Center

Palomar Health has opened a new birth center at Palomar Medical Center Escondido, replacing a similar facility it has long operated in the city’s downtown.

The new center has 33 private labor, delivery and post-partum rooms. Each has an area set aside for visiting family members.

The facility that opened Dec. 1 at 2185 Citracado Parkway will be staffed by the same physicians, nurses and staff who worked at the Birth Center at Palomar Medical Center Downtown Escondido, 555 E. Valley Parkway.

State licensing of the new center was accelerated by a malfunctioning transformer at the downtown hospital. Palomar’s partner, Rady Children’s Hospital, has agreed to move the downtown facility’s neonatal intensive care unit and pediatric services to its campus at 3020 Children’s Way, in San Diego.

Palomar’s downtown medical center will continue to offer imaging, radiological oncology, behavioral health, acute rehabilitation and other services. Also, the birth center and neonatal intensive care unit at Pomerado Hospital will remain open.
