Big Wednesday

The deadline has been extended for Nonprofit Board Service Certification through a partnership of The Nonprofit Institute at the University of San Diego and United Way of San Diego County. The program can help individuals seeking to fully understand the value, roles and responsibilities associated with serving on a nonprofit board. United Way San Diego focuses on aligning community partners and leveraging the time, talent and treasure of their corporate partners. Because of this, United Way San Diego states it is “well-positioned to pair certified program participants with organizations working in their area of interest that have a need for their areas of expertise.” The six-week virtual course runs from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m,. Sept. 30 to Nov. 4 with a 2.5 hour “in class” commitment per week in addition to discussions and assigned readings.

Experts from The Nonprofit Institute at the University of San Diego will guide participants through engaging and relevant topics, including board governance, and the importance of building a diverse and equitable board of directors. Also on Wednesday, Sept. 16, Amazon is hosting a virtual Career Day where the company says they will work to fill 33,000 corporate and tech jobs nationwide.

The e-commerce giant in the past had held career day at locations around the country, but this year is making the event all digital because of COVID-19.

According to Amazon, every job offered at the event will have a minimum pay of $15 an hour, as well as health insurance, up to 20 weeks of parental leave, and company-funded upskilling opportunities. Amazon had previously announced it was expanding its San Diego operations by 200 people.

Registration for the live event is available at amazoncareerday.com and the fair will feature free virtual job coaching sessions hosted by Amazon recruiters.

COVID-19 has had a profound effect on not only businesses, but employees. Marsh & McLennan Agency is hosting a webinar at 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16 where how organizations are managing the pandemic and employee well-being will be discussed.
