The San Diego Unified Port District and the Port Tenants Association are hosting a first-time event, San Diego Bay Days.
The five-week public celebration, designed to bring more people in the region to the bayfront, runs through May 5.
Frank Urtasun, chairman of the Port District’s board of commissioners, wants Bay Days to be considered “a great opportunity for those who live in the region to come down to the harbor and enjoy the wide array of activities that San Diego Bay has to offer.”
The first main event, which took place April 1, was “Freewheeling Around the Bay,” in which the public was encouraged to tour the bay by car, bike, ferry or foot, according to the port. There was also music and entertainment.
Another activity, which takes place at 10 a.m. April 5, April 19 and May 3, is a two-hour, narrated motorcoach tour of South Bay’s waterfront, the port said. A similar tour takes place for North County’s waterfront on April 12 and April 26.
“Safety Day,” which takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 7, will feature activities that involve survival and safety tips for land, water and sports activities. There will be demonstrations and interactive presentations, according to the port.
Urtasun was enthusiastic about the event. “I see the Port of San Diego as a port with no borders,” he said. “To that end, we want to share our beautiful bay with the entire region.”
