Bastyr University Opens Campus in Sorrento Valley

Bastyr University, which claims to be the largest accredited university for natural health arts and sciences in the U.S., is expanding on its Kenmore, Wash., campus by opening locally at 4106 Sorrento Valley Blvd.

Founded in 1978, the nonprofit, private university offers both graduate and undergraduate degrees, with a multidisciplinary curriculum in science-based natural medicine. More than 17 degree and certificate programs are offered in fields such as naturopathic medicine, acupuncture and Oriental medicine, and whole-food nutrition. Bastyr says its international faculty teaches the natural health sciences with an emphasis on integrating mind, body, spirit and nature.

In San Diego, nearly 50 naturopathic doctoral students will make up the inaugural class, according to the university.

“We received a large number of applications from prospective students interested in studying at Bastyr University California,” said Bastyr University President Daniel K. Church. “This enthusiasm is a strong indicator of the need for a science-based naturopathic institution like ours in the area.”

Moira Fitzpatrick, Bastyr University California vice president, added that the university looks forward to strengthening the connection between the allopathic and integrative medicine community.

“Together we can be a powerful force in bringing quality, preventive and acute care to people in San Diego and in other parts of the world,” said Fitzpatrick, Ph.D. and naturopathic doctor who will be in charge of the local campus.

Bastyr University California received accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, making it the only accredited naturopathic medicine institution in California.
