Baltimore Boutique Design Firm Opens Second Office in Pacific Beach

A Baltimore, Md., boutique architectural firm known for large-scale urban mixed-use projects has opened a San Diego branch in North Pacific Beach.

This is Peter Fillat Architects’ second office. The firm focuses on hospitality, mixed-use and multifamily design projects.

James Armstrong will lead business development for both offices but is based locally.

Peter Fillat, founder and director of the 18-person firm, said the second office brings the firm’s expertise to the Pacific Coast.

“We are a small firm delivering large projects with the most personal of attention to design and project requirements,” he said in an announcement. “Many opportunities were passed up by our firm in the past, but with the West Coast opening, we are now able to better serve existing and new clients in more markets.”

The firm is known for its work on an 850-room Marriott Waterfront Hotel in Baltimore and a 918-room Renaissance Grand Hotel in St. Louis, Mo.

Housing Partners:

Community Catalysts of California is partnering with local developer Tom Hom Group to promote its affordable housing initiative, Community Catalysts Housing Alliance, and to develop an affordable housing project in San Diego.

Community Catalyst is a nonprofit serving individuals with disabilities with training and other support services, including employment and housing.

Jim Jenkins, Community Catalysts’ chief executive officer, said the THG has a proven track record of building and managing award-winning single-room occupancy units that match the interests and needs of its constituents.

“Affordable housing for the disabled is virtually non-existent in San Diego and we are positive that our partnership with THG will result in a top-notch housing project that will address this critical lack of accessible and affording housing,” Jenkins, said in the June 6 announcement.

Will Newbern, CEO of THG, said that his firm’s development experience, combined with Community Catalysts’ passion for helping the disabled live independently and affordably, would result in a positive situation for the disabled community.
