Architectural Foundation Issues Call for Orchids and Onions Nominations

The San Diego Architectural Foundation is accepting nominations for its 40th annual Orchids & Onions awards program, which recognizes the county’s best and worst development projects.

“Great design and great development create great neighborhoods,” said Pauly De Bartolo, president of the San Diego Architectural Foundation and principal with De Bartolo + Rimanic Design Studio. “This is a critical time as San Diego debates how to accommodate future growth and considers several landmark projects. Everybody should come out and voice their opinion about what they think represents a good built environment.”

Members of the public may anonymously submit nominations, which should include photos, at orchidsandonions.org through July 31 of what they consider the best (orchids) and the worst (onions) projects in San Diego.

Projects must have been built in the last three years and be either non-residential or include at least four residential units. No single-family homes will be considered.

The program features five categories: architecture, historic preservation, landscape architecture, interior design and miscellaneous, for elements such as public art, lighting and graphics.

Awardees will be announced at a ceremony Oct. 13 at Spreckles Theatre.
