Topgolf, a popular golf-themed entertainment company, could be teeing it up soon at a new location on Harbor Island.
Port of San Diego officials have confirmed that earlier this month (Jan. 4), Carlsbad-based Callaway Golf, which owns Topgolf, entered into an Exclusive Negotiating Agreement (ENA) with the Port.Â
Under the ENA, Topgolf is required to submit a detailed project description and pro-forma for a project to be located within a portion of the East Basin Industrial Subarea of East Harbor Island, where rental car services and the Port’s Harbor Police Headquarters are currently located.
Port of San Diego staff anticipates receiving a project description in the coming months and presenting it to its board for consideration in the spring.
If the Harbor Island project is approved and built, it will be the third location for the golf-themed entertainment venue in Southern California. Two locations are currently under development in the Los Angeles areas of Ontario and El Segundo and the company already operates a location in San Jose and “Swing Studio” in Irvine.
A San Diego Topgolf location has been anticipated since the Dallas, Texas-based company was acquired by Callaway in March of last year. At the time of the $2.66 billion purchase, Callaway already owned a 14% share of Topgolf.
Topgolf has more than 60 locations across the U.S. as well as six international locations in five countries and another currently in development in Germany.
According to the company’s website, topgolf.com, Topgolf is a “sports entertainment complex that features an inclusive, high-tech golf game that everyone can enjoy. Paired with an outstanding food and beverage menu, climate-controlled hitting bays and music, every Topgolf has an energetic hum that you can feel right when you walk through the door.”
Topgolf’s high-tech golf games “utilize micro-chipped golf balls and Toptracer technology to keep track of every shot,” according to the website.
