Fairmont Grand Del Mar Completing $10M Reno Project

HOSPITALITY: Outdoor Space Created for Pandemic Updated, Made Permanent

DEL MAR – The Fairmont Grand Del Mar is completing $10 million in renovations that include redoing the clubhouse, pool areas and adding a new outdoor activity center to replace a temporary one that was created during COVID.

The outdoor dining activity center proved so popular that it’s become a permanent fixture that goes by the name of Grand Social.

“We really wanted people to have outdoor dining,” said Dana Cooper, director of sales and marketing.

Creating the 25,000-square-foot Grand Social turned what had been an open lawn into a three-level outdoor dining and activity center with café-style seating, bocce ball courts, an outdoor kitchen with pizza ovens imported from Italy, and 10 permanent cabanas replacing temporary cabanas that were installed during COVID.

Taking a year to complete, “Grand Social is a wonderful addition to outdoor dining and a unique venue that celebrates a Southern California lifestyle,” Cooper said. “The space was designed to be the social epicenter of Del Mar, a neighborhood gathering spot for live entertainment, lawn games, and family gatherings.”

Scheduled for completion July 1, the clubhouse renovation was designed by Bishop Pass of Los Angeles and included giving it a lighter color palette.

Expansions Accommodate Social Membership

Among the biggest changes in the clubhouse are reworking and expanding the women’s section and extending an outdoor patio to provide additional seating.

“The original club lounge was built with a bar for men only. The women were a little jealous of that so we’re giving them their own bar and social gathering spot,” Cooper said.

The women also are getting a dry Himalayan salt sauna that has walls lined with salt and infrared treatment lights.

On the men’s side, 100 lockers were added to go along with the creation of a social membership for people who want the benefits of a private club but aren’t interested in playing golf.

Social memberships have a one-time initiation fee of $17,000 and monthly dues of $650.
By comparison, a full golf membership has an initiation fee of $95,000 and monthly dues of $1,350.

Social members have the option of upgrading to full membership, with the fees they paid for a social membership applied to their full membership.

As of late April, the resort had about 290 golf members and 55 social members, with the golf membership capped at 325 and a goal of having about 100 social members, according to Cooper.

The lobby bar and library were remodeled, with private liquor lockers and a flat screen television added to the library.

“We’ll allow them to store their own bottle so, when they come in, we’ll recognize that member, reach up into their liquor locker and pull their favorite beverage and pour it for them so they’ll have a place to keep it outside their home,” Cooper said.

The resort has also partnered with Warwick’s bookstore in La Jolla to curate a selection of books in the library, everything from books on dogs and cats to surfing and nature.

The library television “is just really to display art” most of the time,” although it will be available for special events like the Super Bowl or World Cup soccer tournament, Cooper said. “It’s not a place for people to gather and watch TV.”

The four resort pools were also refreshed with new metal chaise lounges, daybeds and cabanas and a change in the color palette from the original red and white to burgundy and blush.

“What we’re trying to do with the overall effect of the hotel is, just lighten it up a bit,” Cooper said.
