Claim Jumper Restaurant Is Planned for Downtown Wyndham Hotel

Port district commissioners have approved a sublease arrangement that will bring a new Claim Jumper restaurant to the existing Wyndham San Diego Bayside hotel in downtown San Diego.

At their Feb. 9 meeting, commissioners voted 7-0 in favor a proposal by the hotel’s owner, Felcor Hotel Asset Company LLC, to sublease 7,200 square feet of first-floor space that previously housed the Elephant & Castle restaurant, which closed in June 2014. The hotel is at 1355 N. Harbor Drive.

Plans call for Claim Jumper Acquisition Company LLC to sublease the space for a 10-year term with an option to extend, set to expire in October 2029. A Unified Port of San Diego staff report estimated that the sublease will bring an added $248,000 in concession rent to the port district in the first year, and said Claim Jumper is proposing to invest $900,000 on interior renovations.

Claim Jumper, owned by Houston-based Landry’s Inc., was started in 1977 in Los Alamitos and currently operates 43 full-service restaurants in nine states, including three in San Diego County.

Port officials also gave the go-head for the Wyndham to sublease 1,950 square feet on its ground floor for five years to retail chain Travel Traders, which operates more than 200 stores at hotels nationwide. The Wyndham is replacing its existing gift shop operator in mid-2016.
