$70 Million Renovation of Omni La Costa Finishing

HOSPITALITY: Golf Course Will Reopen to Public Following NCAA Championships

CARLSBAD – Omni La Costa Resort & Spa is wrapping up the latest phase of a more than $70 million, three-year renovation that includes redoing the resort’s more than 600 guest rooms, suites and villas in the 400-acre resort.

The resort’s 18-hole championship golf course is also being redone in time for an NCAA tournament later this year, and the spa is expanding with the addition of new salt rooms, refurbished steam rooms, and a new look.

“It’s been a full repositioning of the resort that kind of started in 2021,” said Michelle Zwirek, director of sales and marketing.

“The goal is to really elevate the guest experience,” Zwirek said, with “a top-to-bottom renovation of the resort rooms and the suites and the spa.”

Zwirek described the renovation décor as mid-century modern.

Golf Course Reimagined

The renovation of the Champions Course golf course – one of two golf courses at the resort – was led by Hanse Golf Course Design, founded by golf architect Gil Hanse.

The course was closed in 2022 and is scheduled to open May 13 for the NCAA women’s and men’s golf championship, and open to resort guests May 30. The NCAA tournament will be at Omni La Costa for three years, Zwirek said.

Changes included the creation of a drivable par-four on the 11th hole, a repositioned green on the par 3, 16th hole, and a par 5 on the 18th hole with a putting surface brought closer to an existing creek.

The renovated golf course will also have a driving range and putting greens, and included redoing the landscaping with native grasses, and narrowing the fairways in line with NCAA specifications.

“For the average player, a nice, wide, beautiful fairway is what they’re looking for, but young, college athletes need a certain type of golf course, and it was designed with them in mind,” Zwirek.

‘Top Spa Destination’ Updates Look, Services

The 25,000-square-foot Coastal Events Center got a new look with specially commissioned artwork, including a wall covered with tennis rackets that have been embroidered with landscape designs.

Classic Hollywood photos, recalling the resort’s celebrated past, were also added.

“It’s part of our heritage, but if you’re here for a two-day meeting, you get to take a little bit of history with you while you’re getting to business,” Zwirek said. “The racket wall is a really good talking point. People walk by and they do a double take because they can’t figure out why these rackets are on the wall, but of course, La Costa has a really rich tennis history. We used to have a celebrity tennis tournament here that was quite well known, and we’re one of the few resorts that still has a number of tennis courts and pickleball.”

With 45 treatment rooms, the spa has long been one of the big attractions at La Costa and the renovation gave it a new look with a softer color palette. Three salt rooms were also added.

“Part of the spa renovation isn’t just aesthetic. It’s also investing in new wellness equipment. We have, for example, red light treatment rooms,” Zwirek said.
The red light is reputed to help relieve pain.

“Part of the goal with being one of the top spa destinations in the country is making sure that we’re staying current with all of those services and pieces of equipment,” Zwirek said.
