Tech San Diego Hires Recruiter to Retain Talent

The exodus of college graduates to Silicon Valley, Austin and other tech hubs is an annual event — as much of the San Diego springtime as the swallows’ return to make mud nests.

The nonprofit Tech San Diego organization recently announced that it is devoting more resources to keeping more locally produced tech talent in San Diego.

Through its University Talent Initiative — funded primarily by a grant from the Legler Benbough Foundation — Tech San Diego has hired an employee to better match local technical talent with local companies.

New employee Nicole Wells previously worked at UCLA’s undergraduate accounting department, where she was a liaison between accounting firms and students at the university.

Tech San Diego said it hopes to put Wells to work in a similar project with students from UC San Diego: specifically, to source interns and new hires from the university for San Diego’s technology community. Her title is university talent director.

Small and mid-sized companies have particular difficulties in sourcing students. There also is a need for such companies to provide quality internships, Tech San Diego said in a statement.

Kevin Carroll is executive director of Tech San Diego, formerly known as Software San Diego and the San Diego Software Industry Council.
