HMD Global, the Finnish company that makes Nokia phones, signed a licensing agreement with Qualcomm Inc. on May 13. The deal will allow HMD to develop, manufacture and sell 3G, 4G, and 5G multimode devices using Qualcomm’s technologies.
The new cellular standard, 5G, is expected to lead to faster speeds, lower latency and more reliable connections. As device-makers have raced to develop their first 5G smartphones, carriers are still in the early stages of building out 5G networks across the U.S.
So far, Qualcomm has drummed up more than 35 licensees for its 5G technologies.
“Qualcomm is pleased to sign 3G, 4G and 5G multimode licensing agreements with HMD Global that build on our long-standing technology relationship,” Qualcomm Technology Licensing President Alex Rogers said in a news release. “Qualcomm is leading the transition to 5G, and we are proud to make our breakthrough 3G/4G/5G technologies available to leading OEMs like HMD Global and to support them in delivering compelling products around the world.”
