Qualcomm Inc. announced plans to join China-based Tencent in a videogame and entertainment venture built on mobile communication devices.
The partners plan to set up a joint innovation center and draw from their respective strengths, Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM) said in a statement released Nov. 15, adding that it is bringing its Snapdragon line of processors to the table.
Tencent is a Chinese videogame content provider. The partners say their jointly developed games and entertainment apps will employ virtual reality as well as augmented reality. Augmented reality is a process that lays computer-generated images on top of video images, such as in the Pokémon Go game.
“As virtual and augmented reality deployment accelerates, mobile has many distinct advantages, such as making it possible to enjoy incredibly immersive content wirelessly virtually anywhere you go,” said Adrian Ong, vice president of business development for Qualcomm China, in a prepared statement.
Qualcomm is pursuing the project through its subsidiary, Qualcomm Wireless Communication Technologies (China) Ltd.
