Cubic Corp. closed a $10 million acquisition of Vocality, a U.K.-based specialist in secure communications technology, the companies announced on Nov. 30.
Vocality — which was part of the secure communication network that protected Super Bowl 50 early this year — offers embedded technology that unifies communications platforms, enhances voice quality, increases video performance and optimizes data throughput.
Cubic (NYSE: CUB) sees several benefits in the acquisition. Geographically, it gives Cubic another entrance to the European market. It also augments the Kearny Mesa company’s Mission Solutions business, as part of Cubic’s larger strategy of acquiring businesses specializing in C4ISR and ISR PED. (C4ISR is short for command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. Once a client has ISR data, such data needs processing, exploitation and dissemination. The abbreviation PED stands for that.)
Cubic recently acquired three other companies — DTECH, GATR and TeraLogics — that fall into the C4ISR and ISR PED categories. Vocality already works with DTECH.
Cubic said the $10 million purchase price (8 million British pounds) is subject to customary adjustments under a stock purchase agreement.
Vocality is based in Shackleford, Surrey, England, near London. Its U.S. office is in Herndon, Va., outside Washington, D.C.
