There has been a fair amount of movement among the 20 companies participating in this year’s San Diego Business Journal’s Property/Casualty Insurance Agencies, Brokerages list.
Formerly No. 2, Barney & Barney LLC rose to the number one spot in 2012, reporting 155 local full-time employees.
The criterion used to rank the San Diego Business Journal Property/Casualty Insurance Agencies, Brokerages List is the number of local full-time employees as of Jan. 1, 2012.
Barney & Barney is an independent, partner-owned firm that was founded more than 100 years ago in San Diego, according to the company’s website. In addition to the headquarter office in San Diego, the firm also has offices in San Francisco and Orange County. The CEO and managing principal is Paul Hering.
Barney & Barney replaced No. 2 ranked Alliant Insurance Services Inc., who reported 149 employees and the only firm reporting a decline in employees of 3 percent year over year.
The most notable increase in employees was from No. 4 ranked BB&T – John Burnham Insurance Services Inc. The firm reported an increase in local employees of 19 percent over 2011. BB&T was ranked No. 7 in 2011. BB&T is part of BB&T Corp. (NYSE: BBT), the sixth largest agency in the nation and seventh largest in the world, with more than $1.04 billion in revenue in 2011, according to the company’s website. Jim Bayne is the area president.
Only three firms from the 2011 list maintained the same ranking in 2012: No. 5 ranked G.S. Levine Insurance Services Inc., reporting no change in local employees of 50 year over year; No. 6 ranked Teague Insurance Agency Inc., which reported a constant 44 employees from 2011; and No. 9 ranked Cavignac & Associates, which reported 35 employees, a 3 percent increase from 2011.
