Emphasizing Made in America

SMALL BUSINESS: Sister-Brother Team Debut New Watch Firm

Sister and brother Brianna and Evan Edwards are turning their hobby of collecting watches into a business with a goal of reinvigorating watchmaking in the U.S.

Starting online with plans to open a brick-and-mortar store in Little Italy or the Gaslamp Quarter, the pair design their own watches that include one that resurrects the mechanical model that once dominated the market before battery-operated quartz watches came along.

The pair also have their own take on quartz watches.

Their company, Lineage Watch Company, goes live online June 19 with their website, www.lineagewatchco.com, and on Instagram.

Brianna and Evan chose the date as their company’s formal debut because it coincides with Juneteenth, a national holiday that celebrates the end of slavery in the United States.

The pair are of mixed ethnic backgrounds – their father is Black, and their mother is of Polish, Algonquin and Irish descent, Brianna said.

“It’s just a lovely mesh of what America is,” she added. “We’re trying to push that to the next level to remind ourselves of who we are.”

Hence, the name of their company – Lineage – is meant to signify and honor their roots and dreams.

“It’s knowing where we came from, knowing where we are now, and knowing where we’re going,” Brianna said. “Our ancestors, especially on my dad’s side, didn’t have the opportunities we had.”

Buy American is something that is sacrosanct to Brianna and Evan. Their family comes from Detroit, home of the American automobile industry, and Brianna said that buying American cars was an imperative, which partly explains their determination to promote watchmaking in the U.S.

“There is quite a market for our message of trying to bring watchmaking back to the U.S.,” Evan said. “I think a lot of people appreciate the quality American products used to have.”

As she works to get Lineage Watch Co. off the ground, Brianna is senior corporate counsel for Foundation Building Materials, with San Diego offices in Miramar. She earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and international studies from the University of California Irvine and a law degree from Loyola Law School.

Evan, a graduate of the University of Arizona, with a master’s degree in international relations from the University of San Diego, is a procurement agent for Boeing, while establishing Lineage Watch Company.

Brianna and Evan said that they developed an interest in watchmaking when they were in high school and gave each other watches for the holidays.

“It just turned into a tradition for us,” Brianna said.  “As we have gone more in depth into what it takes to make a watch, we’ve become so intrigued with how they move, and the inner workings. It’s just amazing.”

Gradually, Brianna said that she and Evan concluded that they could turn their tradition into a business.

“One day, we were in the Gaslamp (Quarter) and we were just talking about how cool it would be to design our own watches,” Brianna said.

Changing Styles

Initially, the company has two watch styles.

Priced at $895, the Heritage Watch has an Americhron 7A20 automatic movement that is visible through the timepiece’s sapphire crystal back. The two-level dial has polished Roman numeral markers that match the polished bezel and case.

The Destiny watch, priced at $395, has what Brianna and Evan describe as
“a timeless minimalist design,” with a black dial and an Ameriquartz 7320b quartz movement.

“In November, we’re going to be introducing some really cool colors,” Brianna said.

The designs have “San Diego” imprinted on the dials. Lineage also sells watch bands which can be changed to switch from a beach casual to a more formal look.

“We definitely feel that these are timely pieces that are intended for all people of all lifestyles,” Evan said. “They can be dressed up for any occasion.”
